STEAM education is not simply about teaching science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics separately. It is about creating meaningful learning experiences where students explore, experiment, solve problems and connect knowledge with the real world.

STEAM in Action: Hands-on Science and Innovative Learning in Estonia is a five-day teacher training course in Tartu, designed around practical experience, experimentation and innovative science education.

Taking place mainly at the AHHAA Science Centre, the course gives educators the opportunity to experience STEAM activities as learners and explore how these approaches can be transferred to their own classrooms. Participants will engage with anatomy, astronomy, planetarium activities, science theatre, science communication, creative workshops and an Estonian school visit.

Course Programme Overview

The five-day programme combines hands-on activities, science exploration, workshops, seminars, reflection and school-based observation.

Day 1 – Discovering STEAM Through Hands-on Learning

Participants explore AHHAA Science Centre, experience practical learning activities connected with the Rocket 69 educational camps and take part in a behind-the-scenes tour.

Day 2 – Anatomy & Interactive Science

Participants experience an anatomy study programme, complete practical assignments and explore how interactive science experiences can support learning. The day also includes a public science theatre performance and discussion.

Day 3 – Astronomy & Planetary Exploration

The programme includes a live planetarium experience, astronomy assignments, an interactive planets and stars activity and a Home Planetarium workshop.

Day 4 – Science Communication & Creative Learning

Participants explore effective science communication, learn how scientists can be engaged in lessons, discover Researcher's Night activities and participate in a Chemistry of Baking workshop.

Day 5 – From Experience to Classroom Practice

Participants visit Forselius School in Tartu, reflect on the school experience and focus on how the knowledge gained during the training can be implemented in their own teaching.

Erasmus+ Compatibility

The course is designed as a professional development experience for teachers and education professionals participating in Erasmus+ mobility activities.

Its focus on innovative teaching, practical learning, interdisciplinary STEAM approaches, professional development and educational observation makes it particularly relevant to Erasmus+ staff mobility and teacher training activities.
